Coppin. A Revolutionary Programming Assignment Creator and Grader for the Open edX Platform

Coppin is named after Fanny Coppin. She was the first African American Superintendent in the United States.

Empowr is thrilled to announce the release of its latest innovation, Coppin, a groundbreaking programming assignment creator, and grader designed for seamless integration with the Open edX platform. Coppin empowers educators to create and grade programming assignments effortlessly, supporting over 100 programming languages. Since students can write and execute the programming code in the browser with Coppin, they will no longer need expensive hardware to learn computer science.

Coppin's streamlined interface enables instructors to develop programming assignments in under three minutes, revolutionizing how programming courses are created and delivered on the Open edX platform. By harnessing the power of CodeEditorXblock, an XBlock for Open edX that facilitates input and checking of any programming language, and Doctor, a secure server for executing arbitrary code, Coppin offers a comprehensive solution for programming education.

"Our goal is to enhance the learning experience by providing a user-friendly and versatile platform that supports a wide range of programming languages. With our mission to help democratize education, we made Coppin completely free and open-source software. Any educational institution can now use the software we developed to create a computer science course." - Devezin

Key features of Coppin include:

  1. Support for over 100 programming languages, allowing educators to create Open edX courses in any language they wish.

  2. Removes the digital barriers to entry for students to participate in computer science courses.

  3. A seamless integration with CodeEditorXblock, enabling efficient input and checking of programming assignments.

  4. A secure, cloud-based execution environment powered by Doctor eliminates students' need to have expensive computers for compiling code.

  5. Free and Open Source Software

Coppin is now available for educators and institutions using the Open edX platform. We are looking for volunteers to help us continue to upgrade Coppin and its capabilities. Feel free to check out our demo of Coppin at the Open edX conference, contribute to the code on our GitHub (Coppin, Doctor, CodeEditorXblock) or contact support@empowrco.org for more information.
